Overview

A full book jacket for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (Alice au Pays des Merveilles): front cover, back cover and spine, plus a matching bookmark. I printed and assembled the jacket on a real book to check how it holds up in hand.

The brief

Design a cover and a bookmark for Alice in Wonderland that captures the reader's imagination and invites them into Alice's world through a consistent, creative art direction. The whole piece had to feel harmonious, balanced and professional.

  • A visual extension of the cover: a bookmark

Process

01 · Moodboard

  • A palette inspired by the classic Disney film. Darker shades reflect the depth of Alice's imagination, evoke the world under the rabbit hole, and show the story is more than a classic fairy tale.
  • A playful, whimsical title face. Its swirling serifs suggest Alice's curiosity and push the sense of fantasy.
  • A simple, friendly face for the synopsis to balance the bold title.

02 · Sketches

I sketched the objects Alice meets along the way (playing cards, the Queen's crown, a cupcake, the Cheshire Cat's grin, a key, the teapot, the Mad Hatter's hat, mushrooms) and a first layout with the title wrapped around a spiral.

03 · The cover

The wraparound cover sits on a deep blue night background. The spiral at the centre is Alice's fall down the rabbit hole, its hypnotic effect like a dream without end. Floating objects across the front, spine and back show everything she meets on the way.

One day, Alice follows a mysterious White Rabbit and tumbles down a rabbit hole into an extraordinary world full of eccentric creatures: a Mad Hatter, an enigmatic Cheshire Cat, a fearsome Queen of Hearts... A land where logic is turned upside down and imagination knows no limits.

04 · Bookmark

A deep blue tag reading "Buvez-moi" ("Drink Me") in gold, a nod to the bottle Alice finds, with a harlequin pattern on the back.

05 · Printing

I printed the jacket and bookmark and wrapped them around a real book to check the fit, the colours and the spine.
